WHY IS LIFESTYLE CHANGE IMPORTANT?

We can all benefit from healthier habits. Taking responsibility for our health and having the confidence and skills to affect a transformation in our own lives is empowering. Unfortunately, behaviors we’ve developed over a lifetime don’t magically change with good intentions but by drawing on our own personal strengths and values, we can integrate goals and strategies which support lifelong change for improved health and longevity.

  • What's going on?

We are living in the midst of a health crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 29 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes, 86 million from pre-diabetes and over 20 million adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death, with about 735,000 Americans experiencing a heart attack each year. The occurrence of these and many other chronic conditions such as hypertension, obesity, and cancer have sky-rocketed to epic proportions.

  • What does that mean?

Evidence-based research consistently demonstrates that our Standard American Diet (SAD) is very much to blame for the upswing in our most common diseases. As a society, we have become heavily reliant on processed goods, fast food, and animal products. Our modern diet is dangerously high in stimulants like salt, sugar, and fat but sorely lacking in actual nutrition. In short, our food choices are making us sick.

  • Why do we encourage a Plant-Based approach?

Whole plant foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes pack the greatest nutrient punch. In addition to containing a healthy balance of carbohydrate, protein, and fat; plants are our sole source of fiber, many antioxidants, and the thousands of phytochemicals that work to positively impact our health.
Research shows that a low-fat, plant-based dietary pattern of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes can help prevent and even reverse many of our modern ailments. Chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and auto-immune issues are just a few of the health conditions that respond positively to these lifestyle changes. Including an abundance of whole plant foods is in the diet also supports weight loss and healthy weight management.

  • What can I do about it?

Lifestyle change really does make a difference. Proper nutrition, regular exercise, and a good night’s sleep will do wonders for your health. Finding ways to manage stress and building healthy relationships also contributes to both mental and physical well-being.
While many behaviors work together to impact your total health, at West Orange Wellness we believe that it all begins with what you eat. Feed your body whole, delicious plant foods, and get ready to experience amazing results. By embracing a nutrient-dense, plant-strong diet we can halt the progression of our modern disease epidemic and even help reverse many chronic conditions. In addition, transitioning to a healthier lifestyle and dietary pattern may also allow treatments prescribed by your doctor to work better, often resulting in fewer medication requirements. That’s our motto, “Attaining wellness… Limiting the use of medications.” But don’t just take our word for it, explore this site to find resources including research links, patient success stories and educational sites from a large global community of scientific and medical professionals.

  • Ok, I'm in. Now what?

Sound easy? Well, maybe… but more often than not, old habits die hard. We understand that true behavior change, the kind that translates into a lifetime of healthier choices, requires a brand new set of tools, and the confidence to use them. That’s why we’re here with one-on-one coaching, educational support, group teleconferencing sessions, and a whole array of community-based activities to help you on your personal road to wellness.
