WHY IS LIFESTYLE CHANGE IMPORTANT?

We can all benefit from healthier habits. Taking responsibility for our health and having the confidence and skills to affect a transformation in our own lives is empowering. Unfortunately, behaviors we’ve developed over a lifetime don’t magically change with good intentions but by drawing on our own personal strengths and values, we can integrate goals and strategies which support lifelong change for improved health and longevity.

What’s going on?

We are living in the midst of a health crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 29 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes, 86 million from pre-diabetes and over 20 million adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD).  Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death, with about 735,000 Americans experiencing a heart attack each year. The occurrence of these and many other chronic conditions such as hypertension, obesity and cancer have sky-rocketed to epic proportions.

What does that mean?

Research-based evidence consistently demonstrates that our Standard American Diet (SAD) is very much to blame for the upswing in our most common diseases. As a society, we have become heavily reliant on processed goods, fast food and animal products. Our modern diet is dangerously high in stimulants like salt, sugar and fat but sorely lacking in actual nutrition. In short, our food choices are making us sick.

Why do we encourage a Plant-Based approach?

Whole plant foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes pack the greatest nutrient punch. In addition to containing a healthy balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat; plants are our sole source of fiber, many antioxidants and the thousands of phytochemicals which work to positively impact our health.

Research shows that a low-fat, plant-based dietary pattern of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes can help prevent and even reverse many of our modern ailments. Chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol and auto-immune issues are just a few of the health conditions that respond positively to these lifestyle changes. Including an abundance of whole plant foods are in the diet also supports weight loss and healthy weight management.

What can I do about it?

Lifestyle change really does make a difference. Proper nutrition, regular exercise and a good night’s sleep will do wonders for your health. Finding ways to manage stress and building healthy relationships also contributes to both mental and physical well-being.

While many behaviors work together to impact your total health, at West Orange Wellness we believe that it all begins with what you eat. Feed your body whole, delicious plant foods and get ready to experience amazing results. By embracing a nutrient dense, plant-strong diet we can halt the progression of our modern disease epidemic and even help reverse many chronic conditions. In addition, transitioning to a healthier lifestyle and dietary pattern may also allow treatments prescribed by your doctor to work better, often resulting in less medication requirements. That’s our motto, “Attaining wellness… Limiting the use of medications.” But don’t just take our word for it, explore this site to find resources including research links, patient success stories and educational sites from a large global community of scientific and medical professionals.

OK, I’m in. Now what?

What Our Patients Say…

Don’t take our word about our exceptional customer service. We have a reputation that speaks for itself. As you can see, our patients report rave reviews about our practice.

I just finished my 4th appointment with Dr. Awosika today and another prescription drug has been reduced to halfthe daily amount! Also, within 3 months of following his diet and exercise directions my GFR went from 44 up to 60! I know of others who’ve had such success. He and his staff are very professional, friendly and easy to talk to. I highly recommend Dr. Awosika.

Douglas P.

My back story is that I had a non-functional kidney for many years, which symptoms has been misdiagnosed as GI problems until I ended up in the ER with severe pain, and required emergent removal of that kidney. My experience with my previous Nephrologist was not the greatest, mostly because any time I would discuss my concerns about my kidney health, he simply said that I’m young and have nothing to worry about. A friend referred me to Dr. Awosika, and I have never been happier about her suggestion to see him. He always listens to my concerns, sends me for testing related to those concerns, and looks at my test results before saying everything is ok. He considers lifestyle changes before suggesting medication, if appropriate. I truly appreciate his dedication to patient care and would recommend him to any of my friends and family.

I met Dr. Awosika about 4 years ago when I was a patient at Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Florida. At the request of my doctor, I followed up with a visit to his office. He provided me with detailed information regarding the issues with my kidneys and set a goal for me to achieve. Over the years my kidney functions have greatly improved due to the diet, medication and instructions he provided. I have encountered nothing but professionalism from Dr. Awosika over the years I have visited him and his staff has exercised nothing but the same.

Mervyn G. Apopka, FL

I have every confidence that I am receiving the best care available from Dr. Awosika. He is very knowledgeable and cares about his patients, and he is very easy to talk to and answers all of my questions. Because his office staff is very nice and always helpful, it’s a pleasure to work with them. I am very grateful to be in Dr. Awosika’s care.

When my doctor told me I was being referred to a kidney specialist I was very nervous and apprehensive for my first appointment. From the moment I entered Dr. Awosika’s office I was greeted with the most cheerful and fun people that made me feel like I had been there many times before. I cannot tell you how much this helped me get passed that initial fear. Thank you all….you are the very best!

What can one say about an A-team? Dr. Awosika is professional, compassionate and dedicated in his field, you can tell this the first time you enter his office, the staff is friendly, accommodating, informative and best of all patient. You aren’t just an insurance number, you are a person who the doctors and staff spend time with and treat you as you deserve to be treated. Thank you Dr. Awosika and his staff of professionals, keep up the great work. You all remind me of what my nursing mentor had said to our class (many moons ago), treat people how you would want to be treated when faced with a healthcare issue. Bless all of you and again thank you.
